India’s light tank Zorawar, which is being developed jointly by DRDO and private sector firm L&T, is expected to be ready for trials in the high-altitude mountainous border with China by the end of the year, news agency ANI has reported.

The tank, which is named after General Zorawar Singh, who led the Indian military to multiple successes in Tibet – an area now controlled by the Chinese Army – will be sent to the Ladakh sector for evaluation by DRDO, officials told the agency. Once DRDO officials express satisfaction with the tank, it would be transferred to the Army for user trials.

Although the current order is for 59 tanks, the Army may order up to 600, the offcials said. The tanks will be of use in the Rann of Kutch and other areas of the desert as they can move through the region at high speeds.

According to sources, the urgency to acquire light tanks is in view of the ongoing standoff with China. In 2020, The People’s Liberation Army deployed light tanks, which which can travel faster than conventional tanks and are more maneuverable, along the Line of Actual Control.
