CBRNe Forum
DSA has become one of the world's top five defence and security exhibitions and firmly remains the Asia Pacific region's most vital procurement hub for Defence and Security. Fully supported by the Malaysian Ministry of Defence, Malaysian Armed Forces and Royal Malaysia Police, DSA 2012 is all set to become the most comprehensive, the biggest, the most attended, making it the most successful edition in its series of 12 shows over the last two decades.
One of the highlights of DSA 2012 is the CBRNe Forum.
CBRNe Forum: 21st Century Unconventional Warfare
The threat of bioterrorism has heightened in recent years and could increase further in the future due to new genetic manupulation techniques and other developments in the life sciences. However, in the event of a biological attack, effective preparation could make the difference between a contained outbreak and a possible pandemic.
"The most important under-addressed threat relating to terrorism,
and one which acutely requires new thinking on the part of the
international community, is that of terrorists using a biological weapon."
Kofi Annan Secretary-General, United Nations, April 2006 Recommendations for a
Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy
CBRNe terrorism has different consequences and needs a different preparation than does the preparation for conventional terrorism. The main differing feature of CBRNe is the danger after the 'bang', a feature that few are prepared for. Fear, panic and secondary consequences are expected to be much more grave. The ripple through society is something hardly anyone is prepared for.
"The synthesis of full-length smallpox virus genomes and the
creation of live orthopoxviruses is now technically feasible."
WHO Advisory Committee on Variola Virus Research, November 2009
